Lead Sawyer

Wood From The Hood is looking for an experienced, motivated Lead Sawyer to join our team and help manage our day-to-day lumber production operations.

The Lead Sawyer plays a key role in turning locally reclaimed urban logs into high-quality lumber. This position is responsible for operating our sawmill and slabbing equipment, coordinating daily production, maintaining equipment and safety standards, and helping lead our lumber production.

Responsibilities

  • Operate an LT70 Wood-Mizer sawmill and Lucas Slabbing Mill
  • Operate and maintain chainsaws, chainsaw mills, forklifts, skid loaders and other lumber production equipment
  • Maintain a safe, organized and efficient work environment
  • Grade, sort and scale lumber
  • Prepare and stage logs for milling
  • Maintain and organize log inventory
  • Track lumber production and inventory
  • Operate, load and unload dry kilns
  • Monitor wood drying and kiln operations
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and troubleshoot mechanical issues

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience operating a bandsaw mill, chainsaws and/or chainsaw mills
  • Knowledge of wood drying and kiln operations
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts and skid loaders
  • Working knowledge of lumber species, grading and scaling
  • Woodworking experience helpful
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Excellent problem-solving and time-management skills
  • Ability to work effectively alone and as part of a team
  • Positive attitude and ability to take feedback
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take initiative
  • Ability to lift 100+ lbs.

Schedule

Our preferred schedule is four 10-hour days per week. Because weather can impact sawmill operations, some scheduling flexibility is required, including the occasional Saturday.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly Rate: $25–$32/hour, depending on experience

Custom Woodworker

Siewert Cabinet / Wood From The Hood is looking for an experienced Custom Woodworker to join our team and fabricate high-quality custom pieces using solid hardwoods and locally reclaimed urban lumber.

This position will work both independently and collaboratively to fabricate custom furniture, live-edge pieces, architectural elements and other specialty wood products.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate live-edge plank and slab tabletops
  • Build solid-lumber furniture and custom wood pieces
  • Construct die walls, reception desks and other architectural elements
  • Mill, join, plane and sand solid hardwood components
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and project specifications
  • Identify and work with various lumber species and cuts
  • Safely operate woodworking machinery, tools and shop equipment
  • Collaborate with team members on custom fabrication projects
  • Maintain a safe, organized and efficient shop environment
  • Meet project specifications, quality standards and production deadlines

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5+ years of custom woodworking experience preferred
  • Experience working with solid hardwoods
  • Strong skills in milling, joining, planing and sanding
  • Knowledge of lumber species and cuts
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship
  • Excellent problem-solving and time-management skills
  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.

Experience working with solid surface materials, acrylic, glass, metal, wood finishing, and forklift operation is helpful, but not required

This is a full-time shop-based position in Minneapolis, with some flexibility on daily shift hours.
